There is an inexpressible charm in the plastic forms of toy horses. Perhaps my malleable child brain was indoctrinated to horse-adoration by My Little Pony, but I have always enjoyed a nice toy horse. To be lovely, the toy needn't even look that much like a real horse. Capturing the essence of the beasts is not a science of exact replication.
After making a chance visit to a used LEGO store, I became enthralled by LEGO horses. There are a lot of them! And they're really cute! My childhood was not marked by any interest in LEGO, and my interest has been so far, brief. I'll enjoy my stint with LEGO Horse, no matter how long it may last
This gray horse was purchased at the aforementioned secondhand store. It is a pretty basic-looking horse, but is cute. It has a blue, cartoon eye with white freckles underneath on one side, and a big spot around its eye on the other. It has a grey mane and coat, punctuated by white spots. The horse has a cutout for a 2 x 2 lego piece to slot in (really, it's two connected pieces, but don't worry). If removed, the gap leaves room for a LEGO character to ride bareback, or to plug a saddle piece into. This horse comes from a LEGO Friends set, a LEGO theme that is targeted towards girls. The minifigure and animal pieces are a bit more doll-like and have a different design philosophy than a typical LEGO set does. This horse is a bit smoother around the edges than I'd expect from a LEGO animal, and as we'll see in later articles, differs from earlier styles of LEGO horses.
