Purple Cat

September 4, 2025

This Diplocaulus figure has been sitting on my shelf for years. Not sure when I made it. My best guess would be 2020-2022? Diplocaulus were large amphibians that first appeared in the fossil record during the Late Carboniferous, and met their end in the Late Permian. Some reconstructions of the creature's head shows projections in a distinct, prominent arrowhead shape. Other reconstructions show a soft flesh caul connecting the skull projections to the neck or trunk, somewhat obscuring the arrowhead shaped skull. I chose to represent the arrowhead shape because it seemed cool at the time. When I painted this figure, I wanted to give it a cryptic coloration pattern, and I ended up making it orange because it also seemed cool at the time.
