I Love VIP Pets 2: Genesis of VIP Pets

VIP Pets again?! The VIP pet featured in this article made its journey from China to be shown in this review.

There exists an older, more obscure incarnation of the VIP Pets which can be seen mentioned on neglected web pages. In the present day, these toys can be found on sites like Aliexpress. It's pretty hard to find information about the series, as the current iteration drowns out any information about the older pets. Searching for older information about them mostly bring up blog entries, several of which are linked below. I would recommend checking them out if you are interested in seeing pictures of the packaging or accessories that were included with the pets. Note that most of the information I have seen about these toys is secondhand, due to the lack of officially hosted materials about the toy line. Some of the product images will also be ripped from these blogs, but are presumaby PR materials produced and owned by IMC toys. I have also included screenshots from video advertisements for the old VIP Pets, including toys I was unable to find any information about, other than their inclusion in the advertisements. I have my suspicions that there may be information out there in other languages.

The majority of the articles mentioning the doll line being "new" are from around 2013. It seems that there are at least 3 waves of releases, the first wave introducing 8 (or 6?) characters with names, personalities, and hobbies. These toys were released in Europe, and were reported to have been stocked at stores such as Smyths.

Evidence of the first and second waves being released was found in blog posts-- and mention of the second wave was much less common than the first. An ad on a defunct YouTube channel purported the existence of a wave of Pets that were going on a "World Tour."

A few playsets released for the dolls: the "Stars Cafe," "Tiffany's Boutique," and a beauty salon, which were featured on the same YouTube channel. Few unboxing videos featuring the playsets can be found on YouTube. There exist some listings for these playsets on the Spanish-language Amazon website.

The pet I chose from the Aliexpress listing is a Chihuahua-like dog (?), or maybe a cat. It has vibrant orange hair that reaches down to its feet, and bangs covering its forehead. Its smizing face is decorated with green eyeshadow. The body of the thing is very small, proportionally, and it wears a painted-on red shirt with a yellow checker pattern. According to the secondhand official materials, this pet is named Alex, and was packaged with a pair of black glasses frames, barrettes, and a collar. She is a "fashion photographer" that enjoys having her hair styled.

When compared to the new VIP Pet, it seems the old and new version have similar propotions, but they do not share a head or body sculpt. It's easy to see how the original inspired the reboot version, and both are cute. I do prefer the style of the face of the older pet, I like how simple it is. The newer pet's hair is much longer, thicker, and is made out of some really nice feeling synthetic material.
I do quite like the VIP Pets. Since first posting about the newer VIP Pet, I have done a custom face repaint on her which I will post at a later date. Dolls centered around non-human/furry characters are uncommon, but apparently do not go unappreciated, based on the opinions of bloggers. It seems that the VIP Pets make for popular fodder for the creation of custom dolls. I, too, enjoy animal character dolls and hope for more in the future. Though it seems the VIP Pets are fading away, I hope still that we will be seeing more furry dolls hitting the shelves in the near future. Even the new VIP Pets are largely absent from store shelves, I was only able to find one by ordering one online. It would be sad to see them disappear with no goodbyes, but that is often how it goes with toy lines.

This page features low-quality footage of advertisements for the toy line. There are also hair styling tutorials featuring the different characters.
